Was ist Thiopental?
Thiopental is a barbiturate (bar – BIT-chur-ate). Thiopental slows down the activity of the brain and nervous system.
Thiopental is used to help you relax during general anesthesia with an inhaled drug.

How is thiopentel taken?
Thiopental is injected into a vein via infusion. This injection will be administered by a doctor.
You will be given the medication in a lying position. After the thiopental injection, you will fall asleep quickly.
During treatment with thiopental, your breathing, blood pressure, oxygen levels, kidney function, and other vital signs will be carefully monitored.
Side effects of thiopanthal
- persistent drowsiness;
- weak or shallow breathing;
- long-suffering heart;
- chills or tremors;
- Sneezing, coughing, feeling of tightness in the throat;
- Bronchospasm (wheezing, chest tightness, difficulty breathing)
Important information
Thiopental should not be used if you have porphyria, liver or kidney disease, severe anemia, myasthenia gravis, asthma, thyroid disease, or Addison’s disease.
Before taking this medicine
If you are allergic to thiopental, you will react or if you are allergic to it:
Porphyria (a genetic enzyme disorder that causes symptoms affecting the skin or nervous system);
Addison’s disease (a disease of the adrenal glands);
Liver or kidney disease;
severe anemia (low red blood cell count);
a thyroid disorder;
Myasthenia gravis;
Asthma; or
If you are allergic to other barbiturates (amobarbital, butabarbital, mephobarbital, secobarbital, phenobarbital) react.
